Star-Crossed Lovers

DS015 – Star-crossed lovers

I wanted to attach the story of the star-crossed lovers for the web page/information you may want to attach to the work I handed in last weekend.

These paintings represent a pair or star-crossed lovers. They look at each other for a final time, seeing each other for who they really are, understanding their relationship can never be. The painting represents the moment of goodbye as they depart from one another.

Drawing from manuscripts about magic, and the Hermeticism principle of polarity, everything has duality. All of us have a more spiritual side and a more mundane side attached to the physical world. This is represented, for example, in Peter and Wendy, both sides of the duality taken to the extreme. Peter Pan is like a spirit, detests order and rules, does what he wants, lives in a far away land in a different plane of existence whereas Wendy is from Earth, and strives to make him be more orderly and more like the ideas of what a polite member of society would be. Anything taken to the extreme is pernicious, and Peter, for example, does not fully take good care of himself, forgetting to eat or just it being make-believe. Likewise, someone who is very rigid and attached to the mundane is incapable of seeing or understanding anything that is not perceived by their five senses.

The two lovers in the paintings represent the two sides of the duality taken to an extreme also. Each one of them is blind in a different eye to illustrate this. Despite their love, they know they will never be able to understand one another, not fully. They can never meet each other in a place that is comfortable for both and so life would be ultimately a burden. Love is present, but oftentimes love alone is not enough.
