BA004 – The Peaky Blinder

This painting of Cillian Murphy in character of Tommy Shelby from The Peaky Blinders, is one of my ‘famous faces’ series.  

An early work in the series that is denoted by the heavy brushwork in the background and bold brush strokes. 

I loved the cinematic grunginess of the series and wanted to try and get that across in the portrait. 

This work was painted in conjunction with a up portrait of the same person – my feeling is that this was the more successful.  

The composition format of placing the figure off centre to the right, draws your eye in, and allows you to appreciate the deep browns of the background as part of the piece.
