BA004 – The Peaky Blinder

This painting of Cillian Murphy in character of ThomasShelby from The Peaky Blinders, is one of my ‘famousfaces’ series.  

An early work in the series that is denotedby the heavy brushwork in the background and boldbrush strokes. 

I loved the cinematic grunginess of the series and wantedto try and get that across in the portrait. 

This work was painted in conjunction with a close-upportrait of the same person – my feeling is that this wasthe more successful.  

The composition format of placingthe figure off centre to the right, draws your eye in, andallows you to appreciate the deep browns of thebackground as part of the piece.
